Editor’s Note From August-September 2015 Isle of Hope News
Summer’s almost over and school is just around the corner and a lot has happened in the Isle of Hope area since our last issue.
Construction on the beautiful, new Isle of Hope school building is almost complete, golf carts are roaming the streets again, and Hollywood has descended on the island with multiple Adam Sandler sightings throughout the area. (I know. I’ve seem them ALL on Facebook.)
But the best part of this job so far is the interesting people my wife, Lauren, and I have been privileged to encounter here on Isle of Hope.
This month, we attended the Isle of Hope School meeting at St. Thomas and and felt how excited everyone was about the “New” neighborhood school.
We also stepped into Polly Wylly Cooper’s studio and saw the beautiful tiles she and Joy Davis are creating. (You can see a sample of their work on the front page and read an article on page 5). They’ll also be custom-making the tiles and tile murals for individuals around the Lowcountry, as well as showcasing them in future art festivals in the area.
Lauren also interviewed Ernie Lee, a Savannah teacher, named the Georgia teacher of the Year. Read it to find out how this lawyer-turned-teacher is engaging students and succeeding at a tough job. (Page 3)
In this issue, we also launched a new section: Hope’s History (see page 4). We start sharing some firsthand vignettes from Isle of Hope’s long-timers. Gertrude (Barbee) Magee starts us off with a tale about her father’s terrapin, Toby, who played the piano. The Barbee’s owned and ran the old Pavilion which sat on Bluff Drive near where the marina is today.
You can also learn all about the new school on pages 1, 5 and 8. (Pay special attention to page 8 as it lists the times and explains the traffic flow for the school.)
Also, I would like to congratulate Corbin and Ami Zipperer and Herb Creek Landscape Supplies who received our first Business of the Months Award (and no that’s not a typo). Turn to page 14 to learn more and see a picture of both relaxing at the beach. (They deserve it. They’ve worked hard.)
